John Quincy Adams (1874-1933) was a superb portrait painter from Vienna who spent much of his life in America. He painted many famous people in his time, especially European royalty. He occasionally painted genre work, including religious subjects. (He was not the American President of the same name.)
This superb Mother with Her Child (Mutter mit ihrem Kind) uses the traditional Madonna and Child tropes – the blue mantle of Mary, her white veil, roses next to her and perhaps a Rose of Sharon behind her, but relaxes them a little and places her in a lovely rural setting. She becomes a figure for motherhood in general, as well as the Mother of God. Painted in 1905. 61 x 47 cm. In a private collection.
Please note: The image is smaller than the paper There is a white border of about 1.3" for 8.5x11" pictures. Fine art printers do this because the images are almost never the same rectangular ratio of the standard paper sizes. It also gives the prints a finished look, and lets them look good in a frame without a matt.- Sue Kouma Johnson, text and image restoration.
